The MOT is a legal requirement for all vehicles once they’re over three years of age. Without it, your car insurance may be invalidated. You can also be fined for driving a vehicle that doesn’t meet the minimal safety standards.

However, the MOT has been designed only to make sure that your car meets ‘minimum’ safety requirements. This doesn’t necessarily mean your car is operating at its peak in terms of safety or performance. An MOT Certificate relates only to the condition of testable items at the time of the examination; it is not a good indicator of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle. For this, you really need an experienced mechanic to make a thorough assessment.
